I'm feeling it, too: the stress of isolation, the deluge of new at-home responsibilities, and the gloom of information. In this time of global pandemic, I am relying on bicycling more than ever to bring me a dose of daily joy. And I am not alone.
I have seen my neighbors and their children outside at mid-day gliding around on a balance bike. I have seen people flocking to trails, looking for respite from sheltering in place. I have heard local bike shops reporting skyrocketing sales of new bikes. And some cities are even closing roads to cars to allow more space for people.
Bikes unite us, even while we are apart. Seeing so many people derive so much joy in biking has made me more resolute and forward-looking. It has given me much-needed focus in a time of unprecedented uncertainty.
